You all might have heard about the recent developments in la ZAD in Notre-Dame-des-Landes, France. This is a place that was to be demolished under the plan of building a new airport there. 8 years local residents and squatters were fighting to finally win – the airport project was cancelled. However, this revealed new problems: now all the ‘illegal constructions’ (squats) need to be demolished and all the activists scared away to where they came from by the police. They had to endure an attack of 2500 cops, equipped with 4 tanks for the barricades and teargas salvos, and a very high amount (12000+) of different kinds of “non-lethal” grenades. One of la ZAD defenders lost a hand, over 350 people got injured, some very severe, about 7 people found themselves sentenced heavily and are currently in prison, some up to 2 years for having firecrackers in their pockets. A few years back, in sivens, another zad, the same “non-lethal” “legitimate” state violence (grenade) killed a human life.
At the moment the movement experiences a split between those who want to ‘legalise’ the land and activism, and the people who want to continue the fight and remain at the land without anyone’s permission. A-Fund got a request from one of the latter activists, who would like to collect funds to support their current projects and reestablish those that were destroyed so far. You can read the whole call for support and donation options here.
The Fund decided unanimously to send 91,50 euros to the collective. Long live la ZAD and its defenders!
